Analysis

Challenging ethnocentric attitudes and building intercultural sensitivity and tolerance towards others can contribute to successful cross-cultural adjustment and more enlightened workplace practices. However, this involves substantial awareness raising in order to address entrenched social and cultural learning, which may not even be consciously recognised and which may be resisted. Furthermore, certain cultural practices may not be acceptable to differing viewpoints, and the question is whether tolerance should be extended to such practices, on the basis of ethnorelativism, or whether the universality of uniquely human moral values should be invoked, although this could easily appear ethnocentric from certain points of views. Overall, self-directive change programmes, in which individuals wish to become more open and tolerant may be more successful than counter-stereotype awareness training.
